The Heroes complete the exploration of the mansion, destroying the last remaining undead. Hiding in a storage room, they meet the dusk elf Savid. The elf was on a quest to find a missing Vistani girl, but was forced to find shelter in the mansion. Fearing the undead, he found a hiding spot, and hoped for the best.
The Heroes rest in the mansion, but the night brings a new surprise. A woman arrives at the mansion, on the run from three vistani. The Heroes try to reason with the pursuers, but in the end they're forced to kill them. The woman introduces herself as Ezmerelda d'Avenir, a self-proclaimed enemy of Strahd. The Heroes welcome her to rest at the mansion for the night, hoping to aquire more information in the morning. Yet, as suddenly as she arrived, she disappears before dawn, leaving the Heroes none the wiser.
Still, the mansion was just a side-trek, as the Heroes pack their stuff, and travel to the ruins of Berez. There, they find an abandoned village half-submerged in a swamp. The only landmark to attract their attention is a lonely hut built on a huge tree stump. When they enter the hut, they find an old crone taking care of a little baby that she calls "Strahd". Marlowe soon realizes that the crone is the fearsome Baba Lysaga, a witch of the worst sort. The Heroes slaughter the witch, and when she dies, the illusion that was the baby disappears.
Hidden under her hut, they find a glowing green gem, the second "seed" lost from the Wizards of Wine Winery.
